Local writer’s English novel published on US website

A BILINGUAL writer in Shenzhen has published an English novel on the website of the U.S. literary magazine Brilliant Flash Fiction (BFF).

“The Shaking Heaven,” by Huang Guosheng, a 47-year-old businessman from Maoming in western Guangdong, tells the story of a son’s love for his mother. The English novel recently appeared on the website, BFF, alongside many novels penned by native English writers.

In the novel, the son, Zhou Haonan, preserves his mother’s corpse in a refrigerated glass box and places it in the hall of their ancestral home after fighting for a long time against strong opposition from all his local villagers. Whenever he returns to his hometown in western Guangdong from Shenzhen, he sees his mother there. Many years pass, Zhou dies, and his family members along with the villagers bury him and his mother together in a tomb on a nearby hillside.

Huang is a member of the Guangdong Provincial Association of Writers and the Translators Association of China. His Chinese novel “Shenzhen Dream” won fourth place in the China Novel Contest organized by Tianya.cn in 2013 and was one of Shenzhen’s three entries in the ninth Mao Dun Literary Prize in 2015.

The BFF website has more than 100 authors from many countries including the U.S., Canada, Britain and Germany. Huang is the only author from China. He and another writer from India are the only two Asian authors for the website.

Involved in international trade for more than 20 years, Huang exports IT and computer-related products to Russia, the U.S., Europe and other regions. “I drew inspiration from the people I have been acquainted with over more than 20 years in foreign trade.”

Now, Huang has bigger plans for his writing career. He said he has been contacting foreign publishing houses to publish his English version of “Shenzhen Dream.” “I have an even more ambitious goal. I will make endeavors for the novel to win the Man Booker Prize,” he told the Shenzhen Daily.

Huang won a writing competition held by the Shenzhen Daily in 2000, and from time to time he writes for the newspaper’s Yes! Teen section.
