Preliminary Study Of Literature Development In

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area

Li Lanni (China)

The Shenzhen Writers’ Association held the first the Greater Bay Area Literature Development Summit in last December . We invited famous scholars from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hongkong and Macau to this summit to explore the future development of literature in the Greater Bay Area from a macro perspective which attracted attention and expectation from the national culture circles.

In this September, the Shenzhen Writers’ Association held the second summit and invited people from Writers’ Associations in 9+2 cities. Together we discussed how to promote the literature development in this area in terms of cooperation and coordination and we published a proposal. Then, the Shenzhen Writers’ Association and Ali Literature co-held the first “Greater Bay Area Cup” Network Literature Competition.

I will share with you some of the main points proposed by guests in these two summits. At the first summit, Prof. Chen Sihe pointed out that “It is particularly interesting to re-think and build urban literature and Chinese literature in Greater Bay Area context. When we look at Chinese literature, we will notice China’s local culture first, then going south we have Lingnan Culture, Hongkong Culture, Macau Culture, Taiwan Culture and further beyond we have overseas Chinese Culture in Southern Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore. The map then reaches to Europe, America and Canada etc., and we have a multi-tier culture map. The Greater Bay Area locates exactly at the center of this particular map.”

Professor Chen Xiaoming: “The concept of Greater Bay Area Culture is creative and contemporary. It is the most urbanized area with an economy with most vitality. It is a model zone for reform and opening up and will surely lead China’s future development. We can boldly connect literature development with future city development. Literature here is diverse. Cultures in this area have the same foundation but with different nourishments. Such a rich and diverse culture will together create a new form of interaction.”

Professor Wang Xiaoming: “Our understanding of and reaction to the challenges and crises that cities and urbanization have given us are often too narrow and short-sighted as a result of city culture. City’s decision depends on people living in it, and people’s decision depends on their culture. China’s cities future development and this Greater Bay Area’s future development will influence the whole world to some degree. That’s why culture matters. Lingnan cultivated many talents and cultures a hundred years ago. I hope the Greater Bay Area will reclaim this honour.”

Professor Huang Ziping: “Cantonese literature in 21st century is expanded by multimedia. Many people who don’t live in Guangzhou or Hongkong or Macau understand Cantonese and sing Cantonese songs. Many Cantonese characters are created by HK’s Cantonese writers and it is very convenient to type in Cantonese without switching to Mandarin. I’m looking forward to future possibilities of Cantonese literature.”

Professor Xu Zidong: “Network literature offers numerous possibilities for Shenzhen’s literature. Shenzhen has a significant role to play in Greater Bay Area Culture or Literature. Shenzhen is rapidly developing in terms of GDP, its label is also shifted from labor-intense industry to high-tech industry like drones, Tencent Technology or so-called the second Silicon Valley. Network Literature is the foundation of future development of Shenzhen literature as well as Chinese contemporary literature. It is a collection of contradictions in our society and represents youngsters’ Chinese Dream.”

The topic issue of this second Literature Summit is how to build a Greater Bay Area literary community. Zhang Zhigan, the secretary of Guangdong Writers’ Association mentioned in his speech that “Greater Bay Area literature will explore an advanced system of cooperation through continuous integration, and a development path beyond conventions, thus creating its own development plan, one that fits in the progress of literature in a world-class city group. We must strive to build it into the most shining part in the international literature landscape.”

Representatives from 9+2 cities discussed the long-term literature cooperation mechanism in the Greater Bay Area. The summit unanimously approved Shenzhen representatives’ proposal to cooperate and develop literature. It advocates to build a long-term literature cooperation mechanism among 11 cities of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau by means of regular or random sessions or forums for further exchanges; it also advocates to co-host literary events and share publishing channels, thus improving the exchange platform. In addition, it advocates to host the Summit in turns to strengthen links and build a new pattern for cooperation and communication among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. A literary community will become an important hub for Chinese literature to go global and look ahead.”. The relevant plans are implemented step by step. It has bright future prospects and far-reaching impacts.
