Connecting People Through Literature

Zombory Klára (Hungary)

Dear Distinguished Guests! Dear Organizers! Ladies and Gentleman!

Being a literary translator and the chair of the oldest, and probably the most prestigious nonprofit organization – the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association (HCFP) –, which is fostering friendly and cultural relations between the two countries, China and Hungary, I am very much honored to be invited to this Forum. It is a kind of “double happiness” for me since this Forum embraces both my ardent love and profession – literature, along with my commitment and mission – connecting people, countries and culture.

Maritime and Continental Silk Road, both ancient and modern versions were “built” with the same aim – connecting China and the world, the East and West, and vice versa. Although the basic motivation might have been mainly commercial, but it contributed and resulted the transmission, intermingling and mediation of different cultures along the Silk Road as well.

Being the member of a small but very active nation in the heart of Europe, in the “junction” of Western and Eastern part of the continent, our contribution to the whole is fairly limited but hopefully still important, since we can also add small “building bricks” to the new Silk Road.

Let me make a brief account of my Country’s, my Association’s, and my personal achievements in the mutual development in terms of literary exchanges between China and Hungary, including and making emphasis of course on Guangdong province’s literary exchanges. I would mention on the first place the biggest event which our Association took part in, the so called 1st China-CEE Literary Forum held in Hungary in 2016 May. I firmly believe that this initiative is a very important milestone of the New Silk Road between China and the 16 CEE countries.

Not negligible that the above mentioned Forum was the platform where I had the chance to meet with Mr. Xiong Yuqun, renowned writer, the head of the Guangdong Literary Academy, and ever since we have a very fruitful and friendly connection and relationship. His attendance at the conference was followed by the high level delegation’s visit of Guangdong Provincial Writers Association in 2017 December, led by Mr. Zhang Zhigan, the Executive Vice President of Guangdong Provincial Writers Association. On the initiation of Mr. Zhang Zhigan and the motivation of Mr. Xiong Yuqun we agreed on publishing a 3 volume-anthology (short stories/novellas, essays and poems) of Guangdong Province’s writers in Hungary, which is planned to be published in the first half of 2019 by a renowned publishing house, Geopen, which already published Liu Zhenyun’s novel etc. Up till now this project is the biggest modern Chinese literary anthology project ever in Hungary, including the works of 26 Guangdong province’s writers (novelists and essayists) and more than 30 poets. I am firmly convinced that this is an excellent selection to the greatest extent, which gives a very interesting and excellent overview of the Guangdong province’s literary harvest of the past few decades. This anthology provides a wide range of topics from the big cities to the remote village, thoughts, styles, special dialects etc. from contemporary writers of Guangdong, providing an unique opportunity to the Hungarian readers to get an insight and a perfect survey not only to China in general, but specifically to Guangdong, the most developed and populated province which was among the earliest ones throughout history to open to the outer world and also to start the reforms in the 80’s.

I would like to take the opportunity to express my deepest gratitude towards the Guangdong Provincial Writers Association and the Guangdong Literary Academy to provide professional and financial support to this outstanding project, which will definitely be the milestone of the “go global” initiation in terms of the literature of Guangdong province and the CEE countries, and hopefully will be followed by other book projects!

My experience is – as the above mentioned example also proves –, that personal connections play very crucial role in the successful translation and publication projects, since dedicated people are the real “engines” of these activities. This is also the reason why these kind of Forums are very crucial. In the past few years besides Xiong Yuqun several other famous Chinese writers visited Hungary, and several visits were or will be followed by Hungarian translations, such as Yu Hua’s, Su Tong’s, Zhang Wei’s, Jidi Majia’s works etc.

Of course besides personal connections Institutional co-operations are very important as well, several Chinese publishing houses have already established editorial office in Hungary, and among others we have very good connection with several publishers, including the Canton-based Huacheng (Flower City) Publishing House – here I would like to take the opportunity to express my acknowledgement for their “Blue Eastern Europe” series, in which several Hungarian writers were introduced to the Chinese readers. What we are very proud of that Hungarian Language Committee of CCTSS (Chinese Culture Translation and Studies Support) was established also with the support of the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association.

And now we arrived to a very crucial point, the popularization, i.e. the “marketing” of the literary works, since I always emphasize that in the building process of the “New Silk Road made of books”, besides the literary works the promotion and the popularization is very important as well. Our Association arranged three very successful book launches in 2017-2018: 1.) The Collection of the Shandong Han Dynasty Stone Reliefs; 2.) the poetry collection of Jidi Majia; 3.) Beautiful Arched Bridges – Remembrance of Chinese personalities to Hungary, a bilingual book published by our Association. H.E. Duan Jielong Ambassador also honored our last event with his presence and speech.

Finally I would like to draw our attention to 2019 which is the year of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between our countries, which provides several opportunities, projects, gatherings and events to make further steps towards the building of the New Silk Road between Guangdong province and Hungary, between China and Europe!

Thank you for your kind attention!
